Formal speech: full liaisons

What is a liaison?

A final consonant that is normally silent is pronounced when the next word starts with a vowel or mute h, and it is attached to that next word: les_investissements /le.zɛ̃.vɛs.tis.mɑ̃/. In casual speech French people make only the compulsory liaisons. In a presentation, a speech or the news, they make many more, and this is what makes formal French sound formal. Think of it as the French equivalent of carefully pronouncing every -en in German Wir haben einen Termin instead of Wir ham 'n Termin.

Which sound?

Written Liaison sound Example
-s, -x, -z /z/ nous_avons /nu.za.vɔ̃/, deux_ans /dø.zɑ̃/
-t, -d /t/ c'est_important /sɛ.tɛ̃.pɔʁ.tɑ̃/, un grand_écart /ɡʁɑ̃.te.kaʁ/
-n /n/ un_accord /œ̃.na.kɔʁ/, mon_entreprise
-r /ʁ/ le premier_exercice
-f in neuf /v/ neuf_ans /nœ.vɑ̃/, neuf_heures

Three levels

  1. Always (also in casual speech): article/number + noun (les_offres, trois_euros), pronoun + verb (nous_avons, ils_ont, vous_êtes), after short prepositions (en_avance, dans_un mois), c'est_un.
  2. Formal speech adds: after être and auxiliaries (nous sommes_heureux, ils sont_arrivés, nous avons_eu), after plural nouns (des résultats_importants), after pas, plus, trop, très (pas_encore, très_intéressant), after verbs in -ent (ils doivent_attendre /il.dwav.ta.tɑ̃dʁ/).
  3. Never: after et (et / un accord), before an aspirated h (les / héros, en / haut), after a singular noun (un contrat / important).

Listen for it: a president saying Nous_avons_un_objectif /nu.za.vɔ̃.zœ̃.nɔb.ʒɛk.tif/ runs everything together. In reading the news aloud, that's the model to copy.

Presentation practice: Les chiffres sont_excellents. Nous avons_atteint nos_objectifs. Nos_investissements_ont_augmenté de dix_pour cent.

Grammar

Formal register: vous, veuillez and the art of the business letter

Business French is more formal than business English and closer to the German Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren world. Phrases are fixed blocks: learn them as chunks, don't translate word by word.

1. Always vous

With clients, partners and anyone above you: vous. Never switch to tu unless the other person offers it (On peut se tutoyer ?). Even long-time colleagues often keep vous in writing.

2. Veuillez + infinitive: the polite imperative

Veuillez is the imperative of vouloir (like German Wollen Sie bitte ..., English Kindly ...):

  • Veuillez trouver ci-joint la facture. Please find attached the invoice.
  • Veuillez nous excuser pour ce retard. Please accept our apologies for the delay.
  • Veuillez confirmer votre présence avant vendredi. Please confirm your attendance by Friday.

3. Softening requests

Formula Meaning
Je vous prie de + inf. I kindly ask you to
Je vous prie de bien vouloir + inf. (even more polite)
Nous vous serions reconnaissants de + inf. We would be grateful if you could
Pourriez-vous + inf. ? Could you ... ?
Je me permets de + inf. I am taking the liberty of (to follow up)
  • Je vous prie de bien vouloir nous retourner le contrat signé.
  • Je me permets de vous relancer au sujet de notre facture du 3 mars. I'm following up on our invoice of 3 March.

4. Announcing news: nous avons le plaisir de / le regret de

  • Nous avons le plaisir de vous informer que votre candidature a été retenue. We are pleased to inform you ...
  • Nous avons le regret de vous annoncer que ... We regret to inform you ...

5. The frame of a letter

Part Standard formula
Opening Madame, Monsieur, (unknown) / Madame Durand, / Cher Monsieur, (known)
Reference Suite à notre entretien du 4 mai, ... Following our meeting of 4 May
Attachment Vous trouverez ci-joint ...
Offer help Je reste à votre disposition pour tout renseignement complémentaire.
Waiting Dans l'attente de votre réponse, ...
Closing (letter) Je vous prie d'agréer, Madame, Monsieur, l'expression de mes salutations distinguées.
Closing (email) Cordialement, / Bien cordialement, / Bien à vous,

The long closing has no equivalent: it is simply Mit freundlichen Grüßen. In emails, Cordialement covers 90 % of cases.

6. Nominal style

Business and administrative French prefers nouns to verbs, exactly like German Behördendeutsch (die Durchführung der Prüfung):

Verbal (spoken) Nominal (written)
On va renouveler le contrat. Renouvellement du contrat
Nous allons livrer lundi. Livraison prévue lundi.
Il faut payer avant le 30. Paiement à effectuer avant le 30.
Nous avons signé l'accord. La signature de l'accord a eu lieu.

Email subject lines (Objet :) are almost always nominal: Objet : relance facture n° 245, Objet : report de la réunion. Recognise the pattern and news headlines become easy too: Hausse des prix de l'essence, Ouverture des négociations.

Cognate pattern

-ement / -issement = -ment / -ung

Take a verb, drop the infinitive ending, add -ement: you get the action noun. For -ir verbs of the finir type, the -iss- stem appears: -issement. English often has -ment, German usually -ung. These nouns are always masculine.

French English German
développement (développer) development die Entwicklung
investissement (investir) investment die Investition
établissement (établir) establishment, institution die Einrichtung
financement (financer) financing, funding die Finanzierung
paiement (payer) payment die Zahlung
renouvellement (renouveler) renewal die Verlängerung
remboursement (rembourser) refund, repayment die Rückerstattung
lancement (lancer) launch die Einführung, der Start
recrutement (recruter) recruitment die Personalgewinnung
enregistrement (enregistrer) registration, recording, check-in die Anmeldung, Aufnahme
agrandissement (agrandir) extension, enlargement die Erweiterung
ralentissement (ralentir) slowdown die Verlangsamung
vieillissement (vieillir) ageing die Alterung
remplacement (remplacer) replacement der Ersatz
classement (classer) ranking, filing die Rangliste
approvisionnement (approvisionner) supply die Versorgung
déménagement (déménager) move (house) der Umzug

Traps

  • un engagement = a commitment, not a wedding engagement (les fiançailles).
  • un licenciement = a dismissal (Kündigung, Entlassung), nothing to do with a licence.
  • un avertissement = a warning, not an advertisement (une publicité).
  • un établissement scolaire = a school, un établissement can also be a bank branch or a hotel.
  • Don't confuse with the adverb -ement (lesson 5), formed from the feminine adjective: facilement, franchement, nécessairement (easily, frankly, necessarily). Noun = from a verb, adverb = from an adjective.
  • Spelling: renouveler doubles the l: renouvellement; payer gives paiement (the variant payement is rare).
