Pronunciation

The whole sound system on one page

Oral vowels

Sound Spelling Example Compare
/i/ i, y ville, type German Liebe (short)
/e/ é, -er, -ez été, parler, chez German See (no glide)
/ɛ/ è, ê, ai, e + 2 consonants mère, fête, lait, merci English bed
/a/ a, à ami, là German Mann
/o/ o (final), ô, au, eau mot, hôtel, beau German so (no glide)
/ɔ/ o + consonant porte, homme English sort (short)

Nasal vowels (no n or m sound at the end!)

Sound Spelling Example
/ɑ̃/ an, am, en, em temps, enfant, chambre
/ɔ̃/ on, om bon, nom, nombre
/ɛ̃/ in, im, ain, ein, un vin, pain, plein, un

Add a vowel or double the consonant and the nasal disappears: bon /bɔ̃/ vs bonne /bɔn/, an vs année.

Semi-vowels and tricky consonants

Sound Spelling Example Compare
/j/ i + vowel, -ill-, y pied, fille, payer German ja
/w/ oi, ou + vowel moi, oui English we
/ɥ/ u + vowel huit, nuit, je suis ü gliding into i
/ʁ/ r rue, Paris German Rad (throat r)
/ʒ/ j, g + e/i jour, rouge English pleasure
/ʃ/ ch chat, chef German sch
/ɲ/ gn montagne, signal Spanish ñ

Five rules that run everything

  1. Silent endings: final -e, -s, -t, -d, -x, -z, -p are usually silent (petits /pti/); c, r, f, l are often pronounced (think CaReFuL: sac, finir, neuf, sel), except -er verbs (parler /paʁle/).
  2. -ent in verbs is silent: ils parlent /il paʁl/; in nouns and adjectives it is /ɑ̃/: le moment.
  3. Liaison: les_amis /le.za.mi/, nous_avons, compulsory after articles and pronouns, frequent in formal speech (lesson 38).
  4. e muet drops in fast speech: sam(e)di, je (ne) sais pas → chais pas (lesson 37).
  5. Stress falls on the last syllable of each word group: Je vais au ci-NÉ / ce SOIR.

il faut que, vouloir que, avant que, pour que, bien que, à condition que, emotions (content que, dommage que), doubt (je ne pense pas que). But après que, espérer que, penser que take the indicative.

Reading real French: six strategies

  1. Read the whole paragraph first. Don't stop at every unknown word. Context explains most of them by the second or third sentence.
  2. Use your cognate toolkit (next section). Recrudescence, infrastructure, gouvernance: you know them already, through English or German.
  3. Find subject and verb, then check the ending to get the tense: -ait = background, -ra = future, -rait = hypothesis or reported claim (le ministre serait malade = is said to be ill).
  4. Follow the connectors, they are the road signs of an argument: pourtant, cependant (however), en effet (indeed, because), donc (so), alors que (whereas), d'ailleurs (besides), enfin (finally).
  5. Unpack nominal style: Hausse des prix = prices are rising, Report du sommet = the summit is postponed.
  6. Watch for faux amis when a sentence suddenly makes no sense: actuellement, éventuellement, la librairie, le délai.

Realistic goal: understand 80 % of a Le Monde or Ouest-France article on the first read. Look up only the two or three words that block the meaning, and you'll learn them for good.

Cognate pattern

Your cognate toolkit: every pattern of the course

Each line is a key that unlocks hundreds of words. Read the French ending, think of the English or German equivalent, and check whether the meaning fits the context.

And the safety rule

The patterns work about nine times out of ten. The tenth time is a faux ami (lesson 39): actuel (current), éventuel (possible), sensible (sensitive), la librairie (bookshop), la location (rental), le coin (corner), le raisin (grape), prétendre (to claim). When the guessed meaning clashes with the context, trust the context.
